In its opening match on Wednesday at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Belgium overcame a plucky Canada squad, which was making its first World Cup appearance since 1986, and claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal by Michy Batshuayi. The three points put Belgium atop Group F after Morocco and Croatia played a scoreless draw on Wednesday.

For much of the first half, Canada dominated Belgium, dictating the pace with an aggressive attack and winning an early penalty. In the ninth minute, Taejon Buchanan’s shot nicked Belgium’s Yannick Carrasco on the arm in the penalty area. Davies stepped up to take it, but Courtois dived to his right and saved the shot. So that’ll be a naïveté that’ll work for us and work against us.”

Missed chances, though, were what ultimately doomed Canada. Led by Davies, Jonathan David, and Buchanan, Canada created opportunities again and again, particularly in the first half, but kept just missing or being denied by Courtois.

Belgium needed only an instant to score the game’s only goal: a long pass down the middle, then a hard run and a deft first-touch finish by Batshuayi. Germany vs Spain Live

Lukaku, Belgium’s career-scoring leader, watched from the bench with an injured hamstring but could return later in the group stage. Belgium, after all, had its eyes on a deep run in the tournament. Given Batshuayi’s failure to convert several other good chances after halftime, it may need Lukaku to get there.

Spain could have stopped after four. It might have slowed down after five. The decent thing to do would have been to call it quits at six. It felt just a little cruel, by the end, that even after scoring seven goals, the red tide did not abate. Costa Rica, punch-drunk and dizzy, was left waiting desperately for the referee to stop the count.

On a day that had included yet another warning that status guarantees nothing in the early stages of a World Cup, Spain set about ensuring that it did not go the same way as either Argentina or Germany.

Luis Enrique’s team was three goals ahead and out of sight within half an hour, Costa Rica unable to keep track of the intricate, dancing movement of Spain’s impish teenage midfielders, Gavi and Pedri, or the incisive pulses of Dani Olmo, Marcos Asensio and Ferran Torres ahead of them.Germany vs Spain Live

Rather than relax, though, Spain spent the second half seeking to break whichever records fell in its path.

Most significant, though, was that it had done so with only seven shots on target. Efficiency has been Spain’s Achilles’ heel in recent years; it has not passed the round of 16 of the tournament since winning it in 2010 largely because of an inability to turn its dominance of the ball into the rather more precious currency of goals.

That, on this evidence, will not be a problem this time around. But then nobody ever won a World Cup by being nice.

Could another upset be brewing?

Croatia, the runners-up in the 2018 World Cup, drew Morocco in a scoreless final tally. Spain, the 2010 World Cup champion, made quick work of Costa Rica, winning 7-0 in the middle of Day 4.

Belgium helped by two substitutions

In the 45th minute, Belgium made two substitutions. Thomas Meunier came on the pitch for Yannick Carrasco and Amadou Onana made his World Cup debut swapping out for Youri Tielemans.

The 21-year-old Onana helped slow down Canada’s pace.

Both players received yellow cards within minutes of each other but settled into the gameplay as they held Canada scoreless.

Meunier is wearing a facemask because he fractured his cheekbone in October while playing for Borussia Dortmund.

North America will welcome the world in 2026 for the first three-host World Cup tournament, with the United States, Mexico, and Canada splitting venues. But for now, each country will compete this winter in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The U.S. will look to young talent like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie to make a statement comeback after failing to qualify for the 2018 competition. Mexico will rely on veterans and renowned coach Tata Martino to help them through a difficult group stage. Meanwhile, Canada makes its long-awaited return after a 36-year World Cup drought.

Canada played aggressively in the first 45 minutes of the Group F match. They had 12 shots and a penalty kick that Belgium’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois expertly saved. There were one, if not two, more plays that could have been penalties that went against their favor. But it was Belgium who performed in the way that matters as Michy Batshuayi scored the first goal of the game right before halftime.

In the 38th minute, Belgium’Axel Witzel ran into Richie Laryea as the Canadian player was dribbling toward Belgium’s goal and Laryea fell. After a VAR review, it was determined that the play was not a penalty.

Earlier, in the 13th minute, there was another controversial no-call where Belgium’s Jan Vertonghen tripped Canada’s Taejon Buchanan, but the play was not reviewed by VAR.
